Garofeu's Story
Garofeu made his public debut on May 31, 1979. This friendly character became the face of prevention campaigns led by Conservation-Québec, an organization overseeing the seven conservation societies responsible for forest protection before the creation of SOPFEU.
Garofeu is a chipmunk, chosen not only for his adorable look but also for his qualities in the forest. He is friendly and cautious, always present in the woods, and follows excellent conservation habits.
His name was selected through a contest organized by Conservation-Québec, which received over 10,000 suggestions. The winner was young Marc Bérubé from La Tuque, who won the $100 prize awarded by the Ministry of Lands and Forests.
